Brief introduction to Qinghai Province

Located on the “Roof of the World”, Qinghai Province is a mysterious and charming place. It is situated on the northeastern part of the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau, with eliminate peaks, various landforms, crisscross waterways and scattered lakes.
　　No matter heading to Tibet, Dunhuang or Lasa, Qinghai is the only access for travelers going to western regions. Beside Kunlun Mt. running in the middle, Mt. Tanggula bordering to the south, Qilian Mt. standing along the northern edge, Qinghai Province also has rolling grass land and boundless Qaidam Basin.
　　Not only the origins of both Yellow River and Yangtze River are in Qinghai, the largest inland slat lake-Qinghai Lake, where Qinghai is named after, also locates there.

　　The climate in Qinghai Province is characterized as typical plateau-continental with long-time sunshine. Obtaining abundant humanity and topologic resources and being not hot in summer and not cold in winter, the capital city-Xining and eastern regions are still the heaven for travelers and paradise for explorers.
　　There are some features of Qinghai Province:
　　1) Co-Existence In A Compact Community Living By Multiple Peoples
　　With the 54 ethnic minorities living in Qinghai, Tibetan, Muslim, Tu, Sala and Mongolian are the major ethnic groups that have inhabited in Qinghai since the ancient times. Tu and Sala people are two ethnic groups who could uniquely be found only in Qinghai. The population of ethnic groups accounts for 46 percent of the total population in Qinghai. The population of Muslim is 1.1 million, accounting for one fifth. Every ethnic minority has long history, unique customers.
　　2) Sparse Population and Vast In Its Land
　　Qinghai covers an area of 722,300 km2, ranking fourth in the country next to Xinjiang, Tibet and Inner Mongolia. It has a population of 5,500,000.
　　3) Rich in Natural Resources
　　Plateau-Featured Livestock Husbandry Industry, Wild Animals and Plants Resource
Qinghai Province is one of the four nature pastures in China. Due to unique nature resources and abundant animals and plants resources, there are various ecological, organic, green and environment-friendly foods. Based on pollution-free environment, high protein, low fat and coarse fiber, beef and mutton in Qinghai are veritable green food. Other husbandry products, such as beans, traditional Tibetan medicine, tuber crops and flowers, have become special local products and have wide influence.

　　Mineral Resources
　　Among 127 varieties of the discovered mineral resources, the reserves of 9 varieties rank the first and the reserves of 54 varieties rank the top ten in the country, so that salt lakes, petroleum, natural gas, non-ferrous and noble metal have become the advantageous mineral resources in Qinghai. There are also abundant salt-lake resources in Qaidam Basin.
　　Hydropower
　　The source of three-river, known as “Chinese Water Tower”, is the most important water source in China. The southern range of Qilian Mt. is the main water source of Gansu and Qinghai provinces and important ecological region in northwest. Upper reaches of Yellow and Yangtze Rivers have abundant water resource. The storage water volume in Qinghai can reach 21.65 million Kw, ranking the fifth across the country.
　　Tourism resources
　　The tourism resources in Qinghai is characterized as rich, various, multi-functional. There are more than 900 famous scenic spots, many are scared or unique. The Source of Three Rivers, profound Kunlun Culture, Qinghai Lake and Ta’er Monastery, etc have become monopolistic tourism brands with their great development potentials.
　　4 Economic Summary of Qinghai Province
　　Qinghai economic pattern consists of 4 pillar industries including hydropower, saline chemical engineering, petroleum and natural gas, noble metal extractive metallurgy and 5 advantageous industries, namely livestock husbandry industry, tourism industry, building material industry, coal industry and pharmacy industry. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the national economy of Qinghai Province has been experiencing sustainable and rapid increase, the pace of opening to outside has been accelerating and the living standard has been improving annually.
